Re: EAS Recommendations?

I've installed 30 Dasdec units and I prefer them to the Sage. I found them less annoying to configure than a TFT, and could do it with any browser. The newest firmware also allows you to see Radio status (audio level) and the last received CAP message on the login page without even logging in. The t...

Re: IP Codec

I'd like to toss in another suggestion for a high end codec, the Mayah C1131. I have never used one, but have seen a demo and am impressed at the size and options available. Plus, the retail on it is almost 1K less than the Comrex Access.

Re: ENCO DAD, Your experiences?

Most ESPN Radio O&O stations use Enco. Not the latest and greatest version (I think Dallas is still on v9), but they run is very successfully. It would be my first choice for any new install.

You've been a broadcast engineer for a while when your iPhone does the email ding....... ding........ pause for a minute....... ding -- and you know without even looking that it's your ENDEC relaying something. Except in my case, I have six ENDECs around the state sending me email, so storms tend t...

Re: BOSS Top 40 Style Jock Vocal Compression & EQ Settings

You want the compression to sound 'natural', not 'pumpy'. It's kinda hard to explain, but you'll know it when you hear it. As for the EQ, I tend to do only a little to remove the coloration of the mic in the room. More than a couple of dB and you're doing too much.

Re: Trying to get my brain wrapped around encoders

I can vouch that there is at least one national radio group who does use Orban software processing, and the same computer generates the stream and ad-insertion. They are using one sound card to deal with the ad-insertion, coming out of that through the PPM encoder, then back into the Orban. The comp...

Both our ND5 keys are hanging in the keybox on the wall next to the door to the garage. Yes, they're labeled as 'ND5' too.

Re: Dial-Global

It all comes down to the "human factor"; I've seen Cumulus mess up one of our receivers in San Fran before. But, I will give them credit for the redundancy in the uplink facilities.

Re: I hate it when this happens, and other wiring weirdnesse

Would you believe it's possible to attach a BNC to a Belden 8723 2-pair audio?: Absolutely! I have to do that occasionally with 9451 -- some of our Leitch video equipment uses BNC connectors for serial data or remote control contact closures. It's easier and neater to terminate the Leitch end of a ...

Didn't we 'waste' half a day working on a kringle instead of the WEZY studio build?

Re: Correct Setup For Home Voicetracking Studio?

That will work, as the DBX allows for an unbalanced out and you are only running it a short distance. Better would be something like this: http://www.bswusa.com/Images/Product_Images/hosa_stx103m.jpg as it is balanced and will maintain the noise resistance between the processor and your audio card.

Re: Analog versus Digital Console

With digital, it either works or it doesn't. Wiring is simplified because you're running 1 pair for stereo, and wiring phase is really not an issue. Also, you can easily (and cleanly) run it on Cat-5 and his brothers which tends to be a little cheaper than AES cable. Clocking is not so much an issue...

Re: Trying to track down 'sss' Syllabance sounds on RE-20 mi

It's usually the switches that go bad. When I get one in, the four DPDT switches on front get shotgunned almost without looking at it, I've seen so many with them bad. Surprisingly, the Mic/Line and 20dB switches on front don't appear to go bad as often as the others -- good thing to as they are sta...
