The making of the famous HBO open

My friend Jessica found this gem on YouTube. It's the making of that famous 1980's HBO movie open.

I wrote up a whole blog on finding this little gem, but I'll share my thoughts here, so you don't all rush over there and crash my server!

The old-school 1980's HBO intro was my favorite. Seriously… It blows my mind how something that complex, that cool looking, that awesome, was done by hand. There’s absolutely no computer generated effects in it AT ALL! Yes, there were computer controlled cameras, but still. The entire thing was done with physical graphics!

And to think how easy someone could bang this out in a day using the CGI systems and computer technology we have these days.

I was obsessed with that intro as a kid. I looked forward to that airing more than the movie itself.

A few years ago I tried looking for the audio and I found that "how it's made" video. Awesome.

The starburst effect was ingenious.
