Hurricane Issac

Hope everyone fared the latest hurricane well; we at Disney were not so fortunate

Our station in New Orleans (WBYU) had the top 120' of the tower fall. The station was off the air at the time, as we are trying to sell it and made the business decision to not staff it anymore. Problem is we have to go back on in 3 weeks or turn in the license. I say we turn it in, de-stack, sell the scrap and payout the 5 year land lease, but it is not my decision.

Our DOE will head down there once it's safe and figure out what to do. Initial plans are to load into whatever is left to get it back on the air to keep the license.

120 feet off that tower leaves you what? About 29 feet left? Ouch. 15 degrees is a little on the short side even for a class-C.

Really amazing how the tower managed to miss hitting any of the vehicles!

It didn't. There is a white heavy duty flatbed that I did not show the picture of. The cab is demolished.

More carnage

You can see that it is hung up on itself right now, and a good gust or noisy neighbor could cause the rest of that top section to come down. ATU is currently untouched, but we'll see how long it stays up.

I know of one situation where a station got back on the air temporarily with 100 feet of wire and a helium-filled advertising balloon, tethered to the top of what was left of the tower. I've always wanted to try that for a site test antenna.

I seem to recall seeing that in either CQ or QST magazine back when I was a kid.

For those of you who don't know me, that was back "in the dark ages" before TV, computers, internet, and email. Our first telephone didn't even have a dial on it, and that was in New York! But then, we lived on Long Island, so we were considered "the sticks".

And Mayor LaGuardia was #1 because he read the funnies on the radio every Sunday morning. And I used to listen faithfully, especially to the Katzenjammer Kids cartoon. That's where I learned about the rolling pin weapon, and how not to get hit with one. She's still missing me by the way.
