XKCD win

Click and drag to the left (so you're going right) and go all the way to the top of the mountain... amazing detail, especially on the little tower.

Here is a zoom-able version of it. The amount of detail, from the satellite feedhorn, to the FM 3 bay antenna, to the tall tower using separate guys.

Amazing.

Here's the installation with the 3 bay FM: Image

Given that Randall Munroe (the creator of XKCD) lives in the Boston area, what's the likelihood that the tower next to the hilltop observatory was inspired by the WGBH tower on Blue Hill? See Necrat's images at http://www.necrat.us/897boston.htmlThe dimensions look right, and WGBH has an ERI antenna on a top-mounted pole and a three bay Shively Aux/HD antenna is mounted at just the right height. Both towers have fenced-in platforms at about 1/4 of the way up. I think this is more than just coincidence.

Looking at pictures of the Blue Hill Observatory, it's pretty clear that this is, indeed WGBH. WKAF (the two bay) is also shown. The below image is from Wikipedia (full size at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... _MA_01.jpg).

For more information about this particular comic, this website has the best explanations and links:

The other radio-related items are the Marconi VLF station http://xkcd-map.rent-a-geek.de/#8/2.526/44.868 and the KVLY-TV tower http://xkcd-map.rent-a-geek.de/#5/8.277/74.927. Both images can be zoomed in, for greater detail (particularly for KVLY-TV).

I figured this out from the quote:

"Dubai may have taken the record for tallest man made structure.. but North Dakota still has the 'largest Buffalo monument', 'biggest hamburger' and, tallest pyramid of oil cans. So There".

Of course reference to KVLY-TV.

And that list is also correct:
*World's largest Buffalo monument - Jamestown, ND
*World's largest hamburger, 3,591lbs - world record set - Rutland, ND
*World's tallest pile of oil cans in Cassleton, ND
