Just curious how Cumulus is purchasing 70 Gates Air transmitters when Cumulus is on the edge of going bankrupt, and being split into pieces....

Volume discount?
One bankrupt helping out another soon to be one?
They're trading in 140 old transmitters - who needs backups when you're bankrupt?
Flush with cash from selling off the WMAL site?
Found a buyer for KABC ground, too?

What other scenarios real or idiotic can we think up? ;)

Just because you're in the red for operation, doesn't mean your capital spending is broke..

GatesAir is actually in a pretty good position. They're one of the few major TV transmitter manufacturers. Lots of TV stations buying new transmitters, or having expensive work done to retune due to the repack, and ATSC3 mixed in there as well. They'll come out pretty well in the deal.

We often think of cash flow as the measure of success. But, when an operation gets very big it is a matter of debt flow that keeps the ship moving. I had a small venture that went bankrupt and the IRS let us right the whole thing off and gave a credit for the lost $$. Me,, I am a simple guy,, but if I put a dollar in the pocket the IRS wants a percentage,,, throw that same dollar and more down a rat hole and it comes back in the form of credit from the IRS. You can not do this every year,,, but once in a while it works.

Wow, Rich! Debt flow. Is that really an accounting term? I flunked out of Accounting at the 102 level. Cash flow was something I had never heard of til then and I never could get my brain completely around it. So I guess I didn't get as far as debt flow.

You never know what you might learn and from what discipline on this board.

Think of it as electrons and 'holes'. Both are necessary for current flow. :)

The problem occurs when there are too many holes and not enough electrons to fill them.

An old friend and entrepreneur has the saying... "With a good cash flow, you can be losing your ass every day and survive for years". I know of a number of small radio groups that have developed his saying into a business model.

Seems Gates Air is now looking for a field tech.
