Fun with Omnitronix

Post by ChuckG » Thu Jul 21, 2016 5:45 pm

So the Omnitronix 1kW AM I maintain has started something new.
Normally when lightning is nearby the transmitter mutes the RF and waits for someone to dial in and reset it. The power supplies all stay up.
Last 2 days resetting it cycles the 300V supply as usual, but the RF stays muted. We've had to go out there and turn off the main breaker. The transmitter then comes back normally when power is restored.

I've stared at the drawings for the control card and can't make any sense of the protection circuits. I think the drawings don't match what's actually built. For example: It's supposed to automatically recycle three times, but it has never done that, nor is the counter circuit even present. Anyway...

The (very) few of you that have had the joy of maintaining an Omni, how do the overload circuits on yours behave during VSWR events? Any need to cycle the main breaker?

The box is too heavy to launch in my clay pigeon launcher so I have to keep it running for now. Thanks!

Have you tried a trebuchet??? Some of them can toss about a ton. So, as far North as you are, there ought to be some moats you could target.

Anyway, I'll check with my learned sources to see if they got some ideas. I'll contact them in the morning.

Trebuchet ? ? ? ? Pfffffttt! That's soooo last century.

These guys seem to have the rigging that you need to make it "sporting".

Take it to the Pumpkin Chunkin contest this fall. https://www.punkinchunkin.com/
Trim to fit, paint to match, tune for minimum smoke.

And it's "dried out capacitors in the control card" for the win.
I"m just going to shotgun the whole transmitter, they're all the same age.

Taking a shotgun to that transmitter is probably the best idea.
