Simian Problem

Post by TPT » Sat Jul 09, 2016 1:56 pm

We download sports casts from Fox--one an hour over the weekend. Feed is at :17 as I remember, then it is aired in a break that starts about 22. As the new cast was downloaded, it was saved under the same generic file name. Even if the break was "set"--already loaded into the decks, this worked perfectly.

Until we upgraded the air computer to Windows 10, and installed the newest version of Simian for Windows 10. If the break is loaded, we are locked out and cannot make any changes to that generic Fox sports file. Anyone found a cure?

Not a cure but perhaps a suggestion or two for a workaround. What if you record the sports using a different program such as Total Recorder?

Or, make the sportscast a .krt (or whatever Simian now uses for rotators) with the one generic cut as the only resident. You could enter the same cut twice into the "cart" for good measure.

Then, the obvious: downgrade back to what was working before unless BSI has some help.

This is such a common operation it's difficult to believe that BSI didn't test this.

We use Radio Spider to pull the sports from an FTP site---using the same file name. So the file is overwritten each time--or should be--as it comes in.

Undo this action, normal service will resume! Remember Windows 7 SP1 extended support expires in 2020, so there is probably no need to rush into upgrading, surely?

Can't say this is the answer, but I recall one version having a setting flag that says something about checking the files when they cue up in the player windows, rather than when they're actually fired off. That might be locking the file. If you can find the flag, try turning it off. Otherwise, it sounds like a call to BSI is in order.

Interesting problem, as I know several stations around here do what you are. Some are having their stringers load the files via a shared Dropbox folder, so the studio file is updated pretty much immediately after recording.

Well... that's the point of automation, isn't it? We run local sports casts in the morning during the week, but use the Fox sports every hour on the weekends (classic rock station). RadioSpider does a great job of keeping the cast updated--except, of course, for this lock out problem.
