Governemnt Shutdown and The FCC

Post by AM GUY » Mon Sep 30, 2013 5:11 pm

I just read a article from Radio World that tonight at 12 midnight if the Federal Government is to shut down, they are shutting down the FCC. It will delay applications pending and of course the enforcement.

So I am just guessing, does this mean if the Government shuts down, the Pirates will fire up, AM Stations that can't stay on at night can just stay on if they wish, and Lord, no telling what else could go on? :(

I just want to caution to tread VERY lightly on this post. We do not want "political arguments" on this forum, and any such that are started, will be stopped post-haste, and the thread will be closed immediately. Keep this thread about the FCC's affect from the Gov't shutdown ONLY.

Federal Goverment is shut down, so is the FCC

Post by AM GUY » Mon Sep 30, 2013 11:06 pm

We'll it's happened. Congress can't agree on anything so not only the American People are going to suffer, but us broadcasters too! The FCC is shut down as of this posting. Now anything can happen, applications will be slow to get processed, the LPFM Window will get pushed back, FM Translators from 2003's window are stalled. It's a mess.

Now, I can just see Steven Duffer out west firing up his illegal pirate FM Station, and may other pirates. AM Stations that have to sign off at night or lower power can do what they want and get away with it. This is just some of the things coming off the top of my head. All these AM Changes that FCC Commissioner Paj will be stalled or never happen. I guess they shut down the EB, as I saw tonight that 98% of the FCC's Staff is not to return to work, and no paycheck. Bummer!

I merged the two threads together, and placed them it into the most logical thread. I also want to re-iterate what NECRAT said. Leave your politics at the door. Keep this to discussions on the about the FCC and how the shutdown is affecting it's services and the broadcast community

Looks like the search functions and the various programs (e.g AHAAT, contour, etc.) all work. CDBS log in is not accessible.

LMAO. I told my morning guys the FCC was shut down so they could say whatever on TV.

But hey....at least I don't have to renew anything right now. Though I did notice the station is running renewal PSAs.......

Hmmm. I'm not having any luck with them. Curves and the three Query pages (AM/FM/TV) are all being redirected to the shutdown page.

The FTP server, however, seems to be working -- and ironically, the CDBS data dumps were updated at 4:09 this morning. (although I'd be pretty confident it was a cron job, not a human, who updated them)

Those "update" automagically every morning from whatever state the database is in at that time. I haven't peeked into today's public release but I'd be surprised to find any differences from yesterday morning.

The web queries worked until about 3 PM yesterday, which is when the shutdown notice intercept page started appearing. Today everything goes to the shutdown notice.

So what would happen if a station would be drastically over power or not switch to nighttime power?
What about blatant profanity or obscenity?

Could fines/enforcement happen once the shutdown is over? Or is this a 'free-for-all' since the FCC can't enforce any rules broken during a shutdown?

Just curious.

The Enforcement Bureau is not shut down, and the Rules are still in effect. Why do you think they aren't?

I thought I saw somewhere that the Enforcement Bureau is at least trimmed back...I could be wrong on that, or I misread something. If it is slimmed down, I"d imagine that could affect their response times.
