Replacement Tower

Post by rich wood » Sun Jul 19, 2015 12:33 pm

I have heard that to replace an existing tower today, one must file with the FAA. The FCC addressed this situation in their regulations, 47CFRCh1,73.1690, indicating that if the tower is the same height and within 1 second of the original coordinates no filing is required. Has anyone had experience with a recent tower replacement project?
Thanks

I would suppose it depends on how tall the tower is, and where in the country you are located.

Had experience with building a 225' tower right beside a 200' tower--we filed a 302 for the FM station on it, even though the COR did not change.
Nowadays with the TCNS, Antenna Registration rules, NIMBY's and BANANA's, this type of project may be best accomplished in the dead of night.

The replacement tower is the same height, same face size (using solid instead of pipe for added strength), same lighting, and 10' from the old tower.

Run the location and height through the FCC ASR site TOWAIR and the FAA's Notice Criteria Tool anyway. If you clear both of those there's little else to worry about (other than the NIMBYs mentioned above).
