Serial connection between EAS and CAP-EAS boxes

Post by ScottColombe » Thu Sep 22, 2016 9:20 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm helping our station get ready for the NPT next week. While both our EAS's "brain" and our CAP decoder are updated, I'm having trouble getting the serial ports on both units to talk to each other. The CAP unit has all the files but when I try to upload to the EAS unit using on Com port 1 the CAP unit says unable to open port and when switch to COM2 it says that there might be a bad cable. The units we are using are the Gorman-Redlich EAS-1 EAS and the Gorman-Redlich CAP-DEC. I will the first to admit I'm no engineer by any stretch but any help is greatly appreciated.

I'd start with a call to Jim Gorman at Gorman-Redlich. I hear he is very helpful with support for his products.

FIrst thing I'd check is that the Com ports on the CAP decoder are working. Device manager should show you their number and status.
Agreed on giving Jim a call, he's always been very helpful.

The FCC today denied the waiver request by Gorman Redlich to allow the
continued use of EAS equipment that could not be changed to decode the
000000 All U.S. FIPS code if it was being used by non LP-1 and LP-2
participants who had no downstream stations they were forwarding to.
The FCC had given participants one year to install compliant equipment
and that year was up on July 30, 2016.
It will be interesting to see what the FCC does to those participants
still using the non-compliant equipment during tomorrows test.

The version 2.36 update released will solve the problem. Contact Gorman Redlich for the update.
