Developing: 1010 WINS transmitter site damaged

Post by rockmanac » Tue Oct 30, 2012 9:05 am

I've seen multiple reports this morning that 1010 WINS was forced off-the-air and onto 92.3 FM because of Sandy.

Originally via this tweet from a WINS air talent. Also via an alert posted on CBSNewYork.com.

According to Scott Fybush's site, 1010 WINS was back on the air by about 4:20pm yesterday, but at reduced power

As of this week, Thanksgiving Holiday Week, is the 1010 WINS AM Site back up and running at full power? I went to their website and it seems CBS has consolidated it's TV and Radio News Station's site now to one site. We'll these days, I guess it makes sense. I listen from time to time to WINS on line because they give the news out fast, the things of National Interest I want to know about. In our market, it seems that we have to wait for breaking news, and if Presidnet Obama had to do a National Emergency Speech, we would be the last to get it in our market!

1010 WINS has the unique, cool history, with Mary Weiss of The Shangri-Las being the last person sing on that station in 1965, (and was still in diapers back then), the format change from CHR/Top 40 to All News was a plus. I wished our market had a 24/7 All News Station, but they tell me it is expensive to operate one. Too many people on the payroll for corporates like Cheap Channel, I guess?

People my age, upper 40's to near 50, are still on the go, and when news breaks out, I guess we now live in a world of iphones and Android Phones to get the content we want, as we are on the run. I hope WINS is back up and running 50 KW!

BTW, Mary Weiss has a new band and new songs out. I have listen to the latest CD, and it's Great Stuff! Mary is really cool! :D
