The Commission has announced the following totals for broadcast stations licensed as of
June 30, 2013:

You can also download a spreadsheet containing this data going back (at various resolutions) to 1943.

Looking at trends over the last five years:
  • AM -1%
    FM +3.5%
    Non-commercial FM +33.5%

    LPFM -6%
    FM translators -1%

    UHF commercial TV +29%
    VHF commercial TV -38%
    the DTV transition happened during this window

    UHF non-commercial TV +15%
    VHF non-commercial TV -16%

    UHF translators +16%
    VHF translators -24%
    UHF LPTV -10%
    VHF LPTV -25%
    UHF Class A -17%
    VHF Class A -43%
    The FCC has been trying to get rid of Class A stations, generally by reclassifying them as LPTVs. They don't seem to have too much trouble finding Class As that haven't complied with all the full-power "clerical" rules.
