Best external Android Cell Mic & interface for remotes

Post by Fran3 » Sun Apr 24, 2016 5:05 pm

We did several remote broadcast this weekend breaking in a Mobile Studio. (old converted 5-window school bus)

We used an Electo-Voice 635A Mic through an iRig Pre xlr to 1/8" stereo adapter to a Samsung Note 3 Android phone and connected to the studio via Skype.

But, I was advised that the audio using the cell phone alone with it's internal mic sounded better than using the external Electro-Voice mic. (The Electro-Voice 635A sounds fine in the studio and we are attempting to use it in the field because condenser mic's seem more sensitive to wind noise... to us)

While this makes it easier we loose the advantage of being able to hold up a mic with the station's mic flag on it... which in most cases is instant validation that we are "real" media.. and not just some guy holding up a cell phone.

We did a remote a couple of weeks back using a Mackie mixer, MXL 990 condenser microphone, and a laptop running Skype back to the studio and the audio was great! (The mic is a $100 unit that we have had good luck in and out of the studio.)

The Question: What are microphones and adapters you guys have used with cell phones to get a good quality remote where you can't accomidate a full rig like a mixer, laptop, etc.

Thanks for any help.

We've used the Audio Technica long handle mike (AT8004L) with good results. An external mike would usually be preferable to the built-in condenser mike because you can more easily control the distance of the mike from the interviewee & there is less noise from handling the external mike than from moving the phone around.

Remember you are going into a digital converter, plus an agc/limiter circuit at some point, so too much level into the phone will create those strange cellular artifacts. The 635 is much hotter than other mikes, too.

Regarding lavs... that will work in some cases but when outside the mobile studio we want a mic that can hold our mic flag... which clearly indicates that we are media.

We will check out the Audio Technica long handle mike (AT8004L).

Thanks for all the suggestions so far... if any one else can share what works for them it would give us some more choices.

Thanks again !
