Hi Kent

Slightly before my time.

I'm just past two years now and one of the "youngsters" there at 53.

It took me 6 years to get in the door.

Definately a neat place to work though.

I am wondering if the Gates SW transmitters are still there? They had two HF-100 and one HF-50C at one time. Are they still in use?

Is the 417B Continental still there?

Thanks for the info,

Jeff G.

Now that Harold is out of the picture after some wrong predictions about the end of the world, I wonder how long Family Radio Networks can continue? As I recall, there was absolutely no company succession plan once Harold was done or out of the picture. Running a shortwave station like that can't be inexpensive, and somehow I doubt donations are what they used to be. About all that can keep the tubes lit on that monster are the continued sell-off of the FRN properties.

Heard somewhere last week (sorry, don't remember where) that the entire Family Radio operation was about to implode due to cash shortages. Seems Mr. Camping may have killed the golden goose.

For what little it's worth, on May 30th Family filed to modify the licenses of eight of their non-commercial FMs in the Great Lakes area. I would assume the modifications were the same on all eight but the only one I read was WMWK, 88.1 in Milwaukee. The modification requested is for a main studio waiver, to use KEAR-610's studio in Oakland, California as the main studio for WMWK. The reason cited in the exhibit is purely economic.

Too bad they won't donate the damn license. I know some students who'd love to have an FM license........................

I doubt Family Radio would donate anything, other than maybe some AM stations. Donating things won't keep the lights on though.

Family has some pretty good markets, including Oakland. Their options are to sell off some FM stations and cut expenses by shuttering others. Unfortunately this includes shutting down the SW facilities. Problem is, that network is a ship without a wheel with nobody empowered to make the tough decisions.

I read where it is that way by design. Mr. Camping wants it to go away when he does. Or so I read.

88.9 is not student run. WMSE is, however.

Huh I guess they utilized my images from my tour there.

Any chance.. after they shut down, some of us hams could hook up our radios to the antennas and run a special event?
