Sound Exchange cost questions

Post by Fran3 » Thu Jun 01, 2017 2:33 pm

SoundExchange rates are based on a “per performance” basis... right?

And Per Performance means:
.. If two people are listening to the recording via the stream that counts as two performances.
.. If 1,000 people are listening to the recording via the stream that counts as 1,000 performances.

So if that is correct then is Is my math below correct?

If there are 1,000 people listening stream on average around the clock then ...

$0.0017 per performance
1,000 people listening to the recorded track
$1.70 fee for streaming that recorded track to 1,000 listeners
10 tracks are streamed per hour
24 hours per day
7 days per week
4.33 weeks per month
$12,366.48 fee per month for an average of 1,000 listeners 24.7 and ten tracks streamed per hour around the clock

Is the $12k number correct?

And, when I have posed this question to others they don't check the math... the begin to discuss how many on average "realistically" would be listening to the stream... but for purposes of this exercise please set that discussion aside and base your math on an average audience size of 1,000 listeners.

Thanks for any help.

Your math is correct. It also illustrates why streaming "radio" is a sure-fire way to lose money. The more successful you are at attracting listeners, the more you lose.

I ran a webstream for 7+ years and once I got tired of watching the expenses rise every time I garnered new listenership. At least the royalties are lower for companion streams for licensed broadcasters.
