Re: Sync, time code, and insanity

When you rebooted it did you do a factory reset? Not intentionally... but given the number of settings that changed from where they had been, it's apparent that this was the effect. Temperatures have gotten quite a bit lower lately, and with them the humidity has dropped like a rock. We had several...

Re: Sync, time code, and insanity

Your experiences with integrators is sadly similar to my own. In every case where others have built up systems for us, they have left behind serious errors in design and execution; and generally, whatever documentation they leave us is marginal, and in a form that is impossible to update. That's why...

Sync, time code, and insanity

Several Saturdays ago our quiet evening came to a sudden halt, along with our automation system (which shall not be named): each of the twelve air channels stopped dead, and not even rebooting the gear would bring it back. The support engineer's first comment was, "that's not possible" -- never a go...

Re: 4K/60Hz HDMI DA that works?

Another possibility: is the DA not passing HDCP handshaking? That will cause lights to come on, but video won't display.

Re: "Help" desk

The field tech is due shortly, so we have the server out of the rack and ready for him (it's the very top device in the rack, of course).

"Help" desk

This morning one of our file servers that converts video files for our playout system literally went up in smoke. Found the serial number, filed a support ticket with HP, and about five minutes later got an email back from them. Please upload log files from the machine to the Dropbox folder we have ...

Re: Make the whole house shake

Wow, way to bring back bad memories! I got well and truly initiated within days of starting at the station (1982): the other engineers had gone upstairs to get supper (we were in the basement of a shopping mall back then), leaving me all by myself to run the Muppet Show and whatever followed it. Abo...

Re: Computer-controlled small L-band switches?

Hey, I remember you guys in Syracuse always putting in for an L-Band router way back when I was in charge of capital for the company! You never did get one eh? Damn things were always so expensive. Nope, it never did happen... and now we have just over two dozen dishes, a bazillion Quintech active ...

Re: Computer-controlled small L-band switches?

Can't remember to bring home dinner, but I still remember what Radio Shack part number 276-1576 was... My wife and I both worked for Radio Shack about 40 years ago (not at the same time, though... we hadn't met yet). Even now if one of us goes "15-1140", the other will probably come back with "75 o...

Re: Computer-controlled small L-band switches?

The last three places I've worked in have all used Quintech gear. The current place I am in uses an Evertz. Did you notice that last month Evertz bought Quintech? For years I have dreamed of having a Quintech L-band routing switcher in our plant, but sadly I don't see it happening. We had a Quintec...

Re: BVH-2000 EOT (end of tape) stop not working?

Make sure the timer roller isn't slipping -- give it a very good cleaning with isopropyl alcohol to try and get rid of the surface glaze. Also, make sure that it spins freely (if the bearings are at all stiff, the tape is more likely to slip on the roller). You might want to pop the C-clip that hold...

Re: RING MY BELL

I heard Jimmy Kimmel gave ABC affiliates a chance to donate to the Treasury last night. You're right. I just checked our confidence recorder, and they used the two-tone attention signal several times starting about a minute and a half into the show. These people should know better... but we're the ...

Re: New UPS suggestion

We used to use a lot of Liebert (Emerson) GXT series UPSs in that size: 208 in, 120/208 out. They have held up quite well, and because they're "on-line" units, noise on the input doesn't make it through to the output. Also, there's no glitch on the output from a relay kicking the feed over to the in...

Re: RING MY BELL

And then, NBC Newschannel distributes a package about the test, voiced by Jay Grey, with nat sound of the TONES at the end. So stupid...they ought to know better. They did send a corrected pack, but still... I anticipated this, and explicitly warned our news department ahead of time. The urg...

We did see IPAWS go offline *after* the test, between 3:28 and 3:40 Central. (has anyone else seen that?)
Yes, our ENDECs have been seeing a lot more polling failures than normal for the last week or so.
