Re: Nautel RDS

I wavered between starting a new thread or piggybacking on this one; hope since the topic is related, folks won't mind if I hop on the bandwagon. I would really love to know how to get Station Playlist automation software's RDS output to play nice with a Nautel VS300. I know it can't do scrolling te...

Re: Any Ideas for Cheap 'n' Dirty Talk Show System?

I suspect you have an incomplete understanding of how VoIP in general works, but if I have this wrong, I apologize for trying to teach my gran to suck eggs :) I have an incomplete understanding of most things in life! But, what I was referring to is companies that will provide dial-in telephone num...

Any Ideas for Cheap 'n' Dirty Talk Show System?

If you've seen any of my other posts of late you will know that I'm the faculty adviser for a college station that has gotten a LPFM CP. One of the things both the administration and students have asked about is the possibility of doing call-in talk shows. I figured a way of doing things on the chea...

Re: Out of my Element (Get it?) About Mounting Single Bay

Thanks for the good info! After careful consideration, a Harbor Freight (motto: Fun Cheap Chinese Crap for Less!) measuring wheel, a clinometer app for my phone, and slightly more trigonmetry than I ever learned in school, I determined that going above the tower will still put our center of radiatio...

Re: Out of my Element (Get it?) About Mounting Single Bay

Interesting...
Never too late to file an amendment; LPFM changes are easier than "real radio". My concern with going all the way to the top is...that tower's grounding isn't the greatest and I'm afraid our antenna would become the neighborhood lightning magnet. We'll see what happens...

Out of my Element (Get it?) About Mounting Single Bay

So, as I inch closer to getting my college's LPFM on the air, my equipment supplier suggests that I mount our single-bay "Penetrator-style" (Nicom BKG77 or equivalent) antenna in a particular fashion, but it seems overkill (not to mention over budget) to me. http://dolphinradio.org/wp-content/upload...

Re: Got our LPFM CP, need to choose XMTR

My thanks to all who offered their opinions. Turns out that we really can afford a Nautel VS300 after all. A local TV station gave us an EAS receiver (for which we must buy a CAP converter) saving us about a kilobuck and giving us some budgetary breathing room. Nautel sweetened the pot with a promo ...

Re: Got our LPFM CP, need to choose XMTR

Larcan was indeed expensive--more than the Nautel! Necrat, the BW does look pretty good. Glad to know about the 240V aspect of the Nautel; if we were to go that way, I'd have to double check power availability or do that ol' transformer thang.
More research coming....

Re: Got our LPFM CP, need to choose XMTR

Helpful info, folks. Luckily the transmitter will be in a pristine, frosty-cool, back-up powered engineering center within the PBS station that adjoins our campus. Anyone know anything about Larcan?

Got our LPFM CP, need to choose XMTR

In the best of all worlds I wouldn't have to cheap out, but...the Student Government Association at my college says they will pop for the transmitter for our new LPFM; unfortunately with out budget there will be no Crown, Nautel, etc. It looks like Bext, PTEK, or something else. Other than one comme...

Thanks, all for the info and suggestions! Although I was primarily looking for info on antennas, I learned about other FM transmitters that will bear looking into.

Preferences for Single-Bay Circularly Polarized LPFM Antenna

Jampro, Shiveley, NiCom, ERI or...? Everybody I talk with seems to have a favorite. Locally, folks seem to love the ERI 100, but its MSRP is almost a kilobuck more than the Jampro JLCP-1, and the ERI uses a DIN connector instead of an N. With the upcoming LPFM filing window, our peanut whistle Part ...

Any Metadata Magic Out There?

My Christmas Wish: a way to marry something like Tunatic (which "listens" to a piece of music then identifies it) with MusicBrainz (which pulls up metadata). Basically, it's a pain in the patoot having to hand-type metadata when music is played on vinyl, directly from the CD player, cassette, wire r...

Re: Certifications

CBT . But, I didn't phone it in...I mailed it! Sent a copy of my GROL (and my Extra ham ticket...either will do, but I felt like wearing belt and suspenders) along with the fee, and got a nifty card (and maybe a certificate, I don't remember). I'm thinking about going for Certified Audio Eng...

Re: Wheatstone A500a Manual...Anybody Got One?

Thanks a bunch, Doc! I got a manual for the A300 and said, "Woo hoo!" (or something like that)...only to find out that while there is great similarity between the two models, there's even more dissimilarity--particularly with the pin-outs! I'm going to keep plugging away with the little info I have ...
