Re: National brand tubes

So as a follow up on this, the HT5 dropped below 90%, so I set out today with three tubes- two Econco rebuilds and a new National. FIrst Econco... Tuned up to rated power but with horrible efficiency. No combination of tuning adjustments would get proper output without excessive plate current. Back ...

Re: Proposal XML

I swear they find these oddball formats and ask for them with a straight face just to screw with us lol. Anyway this one is easy..most any modern version of MS Word will export documents into XML. It's Extensible Markup Language, kind of a relative of HTML only nobody uses it. Well almost nobody I g...

Re: Belar FMS-2 Meters

How would a software encoder work for this? you'd need a decent sound card.

Re: UNI

this whole translator thing has warped the thinking of some owners that they now have a full time FM-not so! That is exactly how it's working out for many stations though. I could turn some of these AM's off and not lose a single listener...and the owners know it. Maintaining the AM site, particula...

Inserting a powered USB hub between the two may stop the noise.

Re: National brand tubes

Just following up with some information I got from Econco and Richardson: The National brand tubes are not rebuildable. You toss them out. There would be no point anyway as they generally cost less than a rebuild. Richardson's warranty return rate for National tubes is similar to current Econco rebu...

Re: National brand tubes

that doesn't explain why new Eimac's don't last like they once did. I suspect that component availability is probably a big factor. I'd be willing to bet that certain components are only available from a certain country not known for quality control and often caught fudging specs.... probably why C...

Re: National brand tubes

I have a Harris HT5 that is just finishing up it's sixth year on an Econco rebuild and starting to weaken. Looking around for replacements, there is no rebuild stock of these tubes any longer to purchase. Wow, five years. That's impressive for that tube and transmitter. This tube has been an outlie...

Many of the duds are far past their planned rebuild life.
That problem isn't going to get any better. I think I will call Econco and see if the Nationals are rebuildable now, or
disposable. We'll see. In goes the spare for rebuilding, at least I know it's a solid tube.

National brand tubes

yeah.... I know.. Tubes* lol. I have a Harris HT5 that is just finishing up it's sixth year on an Econco rebuild and starting to weaken. Looking around for replacements, there is no rebuild stock of these tubes any longer to purchase. The choices are to send my spare in for rebuilding (now up to $1,...

Re: Exciter shopping

Is this driving an amplifier, or direct to antenna?

I have several stations with the RVR/Armstrong/Bext exciters, from 30W up to 100W...they've been solid as a rock.
Usually a couple on Ebay under 1K. That's probably the least expensive option that's still decent.

Re: Valley 401 schematic

No longer needed...I did manage to get this fixed. SSM preamp chip was putting DC on the output bus at higher gain levels.
They are no longer available, but Ebay has plenty.
Unfortunately I could not fix the second unit as someone had "fixed" it before me, ruining the SMD mounting pads.

Re: Valley 401 schematic

Thanks Bill!
Unfortunately the 401 and 400 have different input sections.

They had the drawings included in the 400 manual but removed them for the 401.
Why do manufacturers do that lol. Really annoying.

Valley 401 schematic

I need one... Seems to have DC on the preamp input. Level pot is scratchy, Overload lights come on when you adjust the control with no audio input applied. Tried disconnecting the 48V phantom source, no change. The +/- 15V supplies are clean. Checked the surface mount caps for shorts, found none. An...
