Re: Gotta love Westwood One

Back in my tone decoder manufacturing days I would sometimes suddenly get several calls within an hour from customers who were missing tones (or firing the incorrect ones). I learned early on to ask which network they were on...and they were *always* looking at the same feed. I'd then call the netwo...

Turn it off...once they call you (it'll happen pretty fast) you can ask.

Re: Unit or circuit to properly convert stereo to mono for AM Tx is ?

I wouldn't worry too much about the loss through a passive combiner...you should be able to easily make that up at the audio processor. The RDL 600 ohm passive combiner is only -3dB. Any active combiner will just be the same passive network plus an amplifier anyway. If you still want to do it with a...

Re: Warren Shulz has passed away

I got to work with him during the WMVP aux at WLS diplexing project out in Tinley Park and also during his construction of the WLS-FM backup-backup transmitter/antenna out at the WMVP site in Westmont before he retired, and we've chatted about lots of things over the last 30 years. He most recently ...

:(

Jeff is who first bought my tone decoders for inclusion in the Harris Satellite division line and introduced them to the business. I hadn't talked to him for awhile but this is a tough one to take.

If you can get them at all you're lucky, and that's pretty much been the price lately.

Re: PC Software for Audio Processor for FM translator ?

I have experimented with various cheap laptops in trying to put together a loaner/rental processor but none of them seemed to have enough horsepower to keep up. I have StationPlaylist, StereoTool and the SP streaming utility running on a $250 refurbed Thinkpad T530 i5-3320M with 8 gigs of RAM and t...

Re: High Reflected Power Puzzle

Lastly, I appreciate the suggestion to move my "VSWR Inserter" away from the T fitting to cause the impedance angle to rotate around the R axis. However, it would seem to me that the length of such a line would have to be 90 degrees, not 180. You are correct. For small values of -jX a quarter wave ...

Re: High Reflected Power Puzzle

Even as cheap as they are, a BKG-88 isn't that hard to tune. At this point I would attach a network analyzer to the antenna input (again) and make sure that the shunt strap and dipole lengths are set correctly. I would also see if you can find someone with a PowerAIM 120 or 170 instead of trying to ...

Re: Horizontal or vertical

Look at the Scala HDCA-5CP/RM, which is a 5 element circularly-polarized yagi. There are two smaller models as well, all rated for 250 watts. Those Yagis have a lot off the backside. You can combine a V and H pol log periodic using a power divider. Scala routinely does these. It'll take up twice th...

When you ask how they monitor the tower lights and they show you the swing in the phase monitor corresponding to the beacons......
Now that's funny right there...
Funny and far too common.

Re: KYFR AM tower light monitor

Sounds like the tower I "discovered" was 120 VAC above ground when I connected my OIB-3. I think I scared the cows that night. I don't recall ever finding a tower with hard 120v on it but have found several that had enough leakage to light you up if the static drain was disconnected. After ...

Re: KYFR AM tower light monitor

I've done it with current transformers and a comparator circuit set to trigger on an alarm condition based on overall current draw. I used a LM3914 which gave me multiple "taps" to show the beacon and sidelights, and as a bonus showed the beacon flash as well. The remote display had two LEDs per tow...
