Re: AM station to shut down at end of May 2019

As far as I know, the site is unchanged except for a very expensive Kintronic notch filter to get rid of an intermod product detected a few years ago. They were also running the stock C-QUAM stereo built into the BE transmitter. Ryan inherited WADS from Clif. I don't know if he inherited any others....

Re: AM station to shut down at end of May 2019

Clif and Ryan took care of WQUN-AM. Tom and I did WQAQ-FM. Totally independent operations. I don't know who it taking care of the FM these days. The FM was/is student run. The AM was/is a paid commercial business operation.

Re: AM station to shut down at end of May 2019

"Quinipiac University also has a student run class D FM on 98.1, WQAQ. So the college still *has* a radio station, just not the AM." True, but the AM was a commercial station that ran some network shows and quite a lot of local live shows with real announcers etc, so it could make money legitimately...

Re: Changing Frequency Of Belar RFA-1 FM RF Amplifier

A quick look at the manual didn't show any frequency-dependent components other than the crystal.

Re: AM station to shut down at end of May 2019

Saturday morning, June 1 2019, the AM band got a bit cleaner as WQUN / 1220 in Hamden CT was not on the air. That frequency has been active since the 1960s and has probably had close to a dozen callsigns through the years. Now I have one less station that needs annual EPMs.

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

Funny you should mention that. I was listening to Friday night's game (last night) and thought "Gee, I haven't heard any dropouts..." then of course one happened a couple of minutes after 9pm. A couple of days ago there were lots of very long dropouts, some that were at least one full second, maybe ...

Re: AM station to shut down at end of May 2019

Yup. The cat's out of the bag. The station currently runs 1kw day, ~300w night, directional, same pattern. They have an AM-1A running the built-in stereo (that's rare these days) with an older RCA BTA-1x as backup. At one time the studios and offices shared the same ranch-style house but when the co...

AM station to shut down at end of May 2019

An AM station that's been around for probably 60+ years under at least half a dozen callsigns is shutting down at the end of the month. It's owned by a local college. If they actually do pull the plug and don't get an immediate buyer, what happens to the frequency allocation? They're directional and...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

Apparently the LNB was having some issues a few days ago and the CE replaced it. The error log showed low signal levels until the sun heated it up. I'll have to listen to the Yankees game tonight and see if there are still dropouts. Stay tuned to this station for further news and information. This c...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

It's not one of my stations either. I'm just a contract guy working for the CE. I'll start caring when they do. I know, rotten attitude, but when you're dealing with a Chapter11 company who's up to their eyelashes in debt and currently only cares about streaming, what else can you do? I gather the Y...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

Logging? I couldn't tell you and I'd bet not a single byte has been recorded. As the recording won't affect the air product, no time or money will be spent on it. That's the way this cluster operates. Fortunately there are other affiliates carrying the games and I can just as easily listen to one of...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

I know y'all are waiting for further info on this. So am I. I was supposed to go to the station Tuesday afternoon (4/16) with my spectrum analyzer and some lunch but the engineer was out of the office and didn't answer any of his phones, so I just bought lunch for myself and went home. I'm now waiti...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

The other affiliate might be using an ISDN line or something similar. I would expect more delay on an internet connection. They may not have any other satellite programs and figured for one program it's cheaper to use wires than install a dish. Yes, they are west of me and can probably see WFAN's an...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

I recall seeing a figure of 13dB on one display. I think the best it can be is 15dB. Apparently the receiver vendor is resisting replacing the receiver, claiming it has to be something else (the old finger-pointing ploy). Naturally the station doesn't have the $5,000 to fork over for a new one. I li...

Re: Audio dropouts on Yankees game broadcasts

Thanks for all the comments. As mentioned in an earlier post, the receiver is an XDS- PRO4 DVB receiver. It's picking up the C-Band satellite: SES Americom 11 (SES-11), at least for Yankees games. I don't know if the sat dish can pick up signals from multiple satellites. The dropouts are very easy t...
