Re: Wanted Gates BC-1T or equivalent

I'd set your sights higher and get a Collins 20-V, 20-V2, or 20-V3, and have a much better built, better modulating tube transmitter. Parts were available far longer, and support was. Now, that's a standby transmitter.

Re: National brand tubes

Same with Econco rebuilds and National/Chinese, to the letter. The National/Chinese tuned and loaded fine on the HT5, it's running on (East Tennessee Lightning Country special, in a clean and cool environment, 3 years later, still reliable and making power. As good warranty as the Econco, considerab...

Re: harris gates one retune

Every person here telling you to consider that Nautel J 1000 is also doing you a favor, and giving you sound, sensible advice. If I had to deal with the choice of a retune on a Gates Series, or a new Nautel J 1000 for a 1KW rig. I'd buy the Nautel, and know you have a good transmitter, with a compan...

Re: Arrakis Console issue

I had considered that, problem is 11 of the 12 channels would have to have a fault. When one particular channel is on -air, IIRC it's channel #5, putting any other channel in program or audition drops the level on that #5 by 20db. Any other combination of channels works fine. It has to be something...

Re: Broadcast Electronics Console Model 5S150 Issues

That’s it except this one had a 60V supply. Still enough to give one a good zap if not careful. I don't recall which supply was in the McMartin console (I think a B-803) that I last worked on in 1987. I do remember it could give you a poke. I was never too thrilled with that console. Neither was I,...

Also make sure your tetanus shot is current before poking inside. Lots of sharp edges inside. Not the most pleasant transmitter to repair.

Re: BE AM-6A RF Out Problem

SOLVED !!! Inside the PA Harmonic Filter / Antenna Tuning Unit of the transmitter there was a burned up wire that became disconnected. On Coil L3 there is a 1/4-20 bolt that connects three wires together, the nut wasn't real tight on this bolt and the wire lugs connected with it and the bolt/nut it...

Re: Gates One Blows PA Fuses w/ Modulation

Fuse holders are cheap and usually not at all difficult to change. Nautel had an issue some 10 or so years ago with a bad batch of fuse holders. After a problem with one I replaced all of them on the ND25 just taken out of service this past summer. No fault of Nautel - blame it on the maker of the ...

Re: Make the whole house shake

Knowing Kent T's law that everything which goes FUBAR happens when most listeners/viewers are seeing and hearing it, 5 P.M. News is my gut instinct when this debacle happened. Keep Calm, level headed, and pray the engineers, can get it fixed or on standby gear fast, and friendly, and the show goes o...

Re: Gates 5 rebuild

Thanks for that heads up, and also you're sensible trying to exercise standby transmitters regularly to make sure they will run when you need them. I do this weekly, per site. And my crew engineers are scheduled to do maintenance once weekly at a different site (standby on, and this way gear gets re...

Deep Thought, Truer words have never been said. Had this happen with a Gates Five. Happened when the utility switched to open delta. When the Delta to Wye transformer was installed, rig has never hiccupped even once in around 8 years. Time to do the PDM section electrolytics (maintenance item. This ...

Re: National over Eimac or Econco

Yuppers, that's the one. They transferred the manufacturing process to another state, but somehow there was some slight of hand technique - unwritten - of course, that didn't get to the light of day and xmttrs were blowing up all over the country. Some lasted a whole 8-12 hours after tube change, s...

Re: GatesAir suspends AM TX sales (Radio World)

If New York is any indicator they won’t be selling many TV transmitters either. All but one station so far have purchased Rhode Schwarz. Regarding power supplies, it would appear that most manufacturers choose to avoid the whole approvals process along with the liabilities involved by outsourcing. ...

Percussive Maintenance or Shock Test was my goto work description while being held hostage in the 2-way world. Funny story... I got a million of 'em. One of our 2-way customers had an old tube Motorola base station mounted in a ratty old homemade steel outdoor cabinet that had to be lifted up and o...
