Re: TX + Bad Memory = Off Air

I think the transmitter is a BE. Naw, I have to confess it's one of ours - an original NV series - and the article is fairly accurate. The older NV transmitters did a lot more R/W cycles to the flash card than the newer GV series do - and that does kill CF cards a tad more quickly (marketing unders...

Re: Crystal alternative

... unless the Nautel would allow the "divide-by-four", which they use at lower frequencies, to work. Maybe?... The only challenge might be the way the ND1 derives the 2Fc/N signal that it uses for the PDM reference... I can't remember if that's taken from the input of the second /2 circuit or else...

Re: Transmitter plant ambient temps?

Semiconductor, electrolytics and fans all like room temp to be, well, room temp. Most fans, for example, are rated at a nominal 5 year life span at 40 degrees C. (104 deg F). For every 10 degrees C (18 deg F) that you decrease the temperature, the nominal life span doubles... so 10 years at 30 deg C...

Re: Realistic Service Manual Request

Surprised me when I couldn't find it on SAMS website - I got the service manuals for both of my 70s vintage Zenith consoles from there... that said, if the STA-12 was sold in Canada, I was working at an Intertan repair depot around the time it was being sold. Let me hook up with the guy who did all ...

Re: FUNCTION GENERATOR

Trying not to make a sales pitch, but if you're working on any of our current transmitters (NX series AM and GV, NVLT or VS series FM), there is a signal generator built in as well. You can choose type (sine wave, band limited noise or sine sweep), as well as level (as a mod percentage, 0-100), freq...

Re: Nautel V15 GE power supply failure

They had a very high failure rate and were replacing them under warranty. Have you called? Some rumors never die... We had a high failure rate with earlier TECTROL/CUI supplies used in the NV series. The failure rate with the GE/Lineage supplies used in the GV and NVLT series has historically been ...

Re: ground strap thickness

I had an electrical inspector recently require us to cut loose the connection between the transmitter reference ground and the service entrance panel ground. He said the service entrance can only be attached to a designated ground rod and nothing else. Your inspector was wrong. NEC 250.4 was revise...

Re: Audio Bandwidth of an AM Broadcast Station

ClearChannel / iHeartRadio stations seem to have been directed to go to 5 kHz bandwidth many years ago, and my annual Equipment Performance Measurement spectrums show that quite nicely. Pretty much any station running AM IBOC will be limiting analog audio to 5kHz - after several complaints of self-...

Re: RF Spectrum Analyzer

It is a regulatory agency within Canada, they are responsible for "Spectrum Management"; because of proximity to an airport, they are asking for more detailed scans. I'm thinking that the "2nd harmony" is referring to the second harmonic. I'd question this - Industry Canada has vans very well equip...

Re: Nautel NV20 repair/restoration

I am putting this thread in my reference file. For anybody with an interest, with Dave's permission, I copied his entire series of posts into my last Tips N Tricks article in our Waves newsletter - this was one of the most informative discussions on repair and restoration that I've seen in a long t...

Re: Nautel NV20 repair/restoration

Wouldn't it be nice if a B-I-G company like Nautel could acquire the schematic for these power supplies, so they COULD be repaired in the field. Probably would have made the repair job a whole lot easier and faster. Bob M. It really would be nice - more than you could imagine. Unfortunately, we've ...

Obviously I'm late to this party - I need more hours in every day. :) I don't suspect you'll have any issue with the Ecreso, they're not bad from the very little I know about them. As mentioned, definitely for any Nautel questions, anybody can feel free to contact me - but the absolute best way is b...

Re: Nautel NV20 repair/restoration

That's about the best description of Tectrol PS supply in the field that I've encountered... okay, not about the best, definitely the best! Mind if I borrow it for reference? Since we don't shop repair these, anything that I can find for helping folks fix them after the warranty is up is a very good...

Re: 6 KW Transmitter Ballpark price

A couple of additional comments on this: 1. Although Anabolic requested a 6kW transmitter, the specific TPO wasn't provided - that and any future HD radio compatibility could make a difference, one way or the other... 2. Also not provided was geographic location - this group has members from all ove...
