Re: harris gates one

I would check the doorknob caps in the output network. Open the rear of the transmitter and look up....

Re: Cracked, on why 3D TV has failed

MAD is alive and well (perhaps not as well as it once was) and still available on the newsstands and online.

Re: Can Door Knob Capacitors be repaired?

I know this is the FM board, but would the offending caps happen to be in the output network of a Gates or SX series transmitter?

Re: Harris HT10

Haven't ever had much trouble with the screen blocker in those rigs. I'd check the screen supply feedthrough caps on the bottom of the cavity.

Re: Help Gate BC-50C Schematic ?

Transcom appears to have the manual you need for $95 US.

Transcom is good outfit -- you won't have any trouble with them.

I'm Sorry to hear this. Rick has been an invaluable resource over the years... always willing to lend advice even to non-customers. I wish him the best.

FlexStar Exciter Reliability

Does anybody else have feelings or comments on the field reliability of the Harris FlexStar exciter? I have three of them deployed -- so far two of them have failed (both within the warranty period and cheerfully repaired by Harris) within two years of installation. Both had similar failures -- comp...

Re: *AM* "RDS" proposed

Interesting. I thought I had logged into a forum called "Virtual Engineer" that was meant to discuss radio engineering/technology issues. Apparently it's become a forum to bash the programming department. Hey, I agree. A lot of radio programming sucks.... but as an engineer, I have little say in it....

Re: *AM* "RDS" proposed

I understand a lot of the negativity on this subject. There are many of poor implementations of RDS on the FM dial. However, as an industry, we must resign ourselves to the fact that consumers are demanding these features. If we don't provide them, they'll go to somebody that will. Many would argue ...

Re: SX5 digital pot AD7525

He was offered a transfer to sales...to buy a new transmitter instead. And this engineer is not prone to telling stories; he was really upset about it considering that the station is less than a two hour drive to Quincy and they were off the air due to transmitter failure (SX-1). He politely hung u...

Re: SX5 digital pot AD7525

Have you tried to contact him lately? The most recent attempt by one of my clients on any SX inquiry was met with a "we no longer support that transmitter, good bye" from Harris. Frankly, I'm surprised at that. I've found that the discontinuance of support by Harris means that parts will no longer ...

Re: SX5 digital pot AD7525

Maintaining the proper RF drive level is critical to the life of the FETs. There's a section in the manual about measuring the RF drive level -- if my recollection is correct, you can measure it across a resistor on each PA module. I believe the correct level is around 30 volts P/P, +/- a few -- but...

Re: SX5 digital pot AD7525

If I'm thinking of the correct mod, it's a small daughter board that just pushes into the socket (or for a directly soldered board, you'll have to solder it in). I don't think it involves screw holes or anything, but I may be mixing it up with another mod. I've attached the Harris mod below. Pretty...

Re: Building a short tower near an AM directional array

Potomac probably won't even talk to you about that meter now. There is another place which was posted here (and I've lost the info) which still calibrates them. Fossil (RGORJANCE) will know... Potomac will be happy to service and calibrate your FIM-21. I had mine done earlier this year. Calibration...
