Re: Crosstalk from program side on Radio Sysytems RS 12 board?

By chance has someone recently connected the console's balanced program out to an unbalanced destination in a way that grounds one side of the balanced line? The shorted side of the line will create ground currents that can manifest in crosstalk, especially in mic-level inputs. I've had to chase thi...

Re: RX1290 decoder failure

RX1290s have been out of production for some time now; bad capacitors would be my initial suspicion. On the other hand, 1290s are newer than the initial surge of RoHS equipment, so they probably aren't falling victim to the tin whisker failures from lead-free solder. (Nearly all of our original Tera...

Re: Sony camera leap day bug

Good idea. I almost posted it here, but figured it didn't apply to the majority of members who work in radio.

More broadly, this bug could apply to other systems. I'm a bit nervous about our automation, which was written after the last leap day -- so this will be its first rodeo.

Re: Oh those viewer calls...

Similar to changing format... a number of years ago when the Oprah Winfrey show started, we dropped Donahue to run Oprah at 4; the NBC station across town picked up Donahue. Several days later a woman called me to say that she was having trouble getting Donahue on her set. Me: I'm sorry, we don't ca...

Re: Oh those viewer calls...

A week later, he calls back. His wife bought a VCR & didn't tell him. (and yes, she hooked it up wrong & to output on channel 3) Unusual -- generally it's the guy who buys the toys without talking to his wife. I got cussed out years ago by a woman who accused us of putting the word "STOP" ove...

Makes you wonder how some people find their pants in the morning.

Then again...
That's why I will never use Skype or Facetime to answer viewer calls. Some things are best unseen.

Oh those viewer calls...

For whatever reason, I seem to get the bulk of viewer calls at my station whenever they seem even minimally technical (or when other people simply don't want to deal with them). And some of them are... remarkable. Yesterday's was a woman who started off by complaining that she doesn't see our channe...

Re: BVH-2000: Color flickering

Any suggestions with BVT's color tint problem? I still have not figured out what cause this problem, except that the bug is in the TBC (not in the VTR). Hue is controlled by a DC voltage that varies between -5 and +5 volts, with ground (0v) giving you the nominal preset. The front panel knob feeds ...

Re: AM Digital NPRM

They can do it because the audio is digitized and processed (i.e. compressed) down to a bit rate that fits in the 10 kHz wide slot. Just like OTA HDTV and mp3's. OTA HDTV (that is, ATSC) uses Dolby AC3 encoding that provides 20-20kHz on every channel except LFE, which runs 20-120Hz. A typical 5.1 e...

Re: NBC Namedropper Trigger Configuration / METAR server

You can do that - Open up the METAR page in your browser - For METAR server IP put 0.0.0.0 In the METAR Server DNS Name field put "tgftp.nws.noaa.gov" without the quotes hit SUBMIT and you're done CS Bear in mind that only the more recent firmware releases supports this... you might need to update ...

Re: 4K output on rx8200?

The RX8200's 3G output is SMPTE 424M, which is single link @ 3Gb/s; the Blackmagic MicroConverter's input is also single link. The two should work together just fine. The Blackmagic converter is about $59 on the street, so your risk is fairly minimal compared to what it would have cost just a couple...
