Re: The reason why HF conditions have been bad

Do be careful about assuming a band will be dead just because of the lack of sunspots. I worked the recent TX5C and VP6DX expeditions on all HF bands. Yes, including 10 and 12 meters. Sporadic-E propagation is independent of sunspots. (much to the dismay of those of us who run TV stations on channel...

Re: PSIP checklist?

- Maybe the most important... the STT seems to be *precisely* double the GPS_UTC_offset ahead. (or is it behind? Horrible memory...) I have a vague recollection of being told this is right, for an obscure reason? That would be behind. EST is -05:00 GMT No, this isn't the UTC/CT offset. This is an o...

PSIP checklist?

So, my boss handed me this PSIP Checklist on Monday. Not sure where it came from but it makes sense & at least gets us to pay attention to the thing... But it brought up a couple of questions, would love some input from the rest of you: - Maybe the most important... the STT seems to be *precisely* d...

Re: Someone looking for a back up 5k FM transmitter??

Nope, not if the station has a lot of line loss to the antenna, and the antenna has fractional gain, like a single bay circular would have. And, they probably got a good deal on it when they bought it :P At one of my FMs, RF leaving the antenna is roughly 38% of the TPO. Single bay shively. Most in...

We use their labels with MS Word and some templates we downloaded from the Brady website. Works great - and I wouldn't do it any other way.

Re: Sunspots

The outage isn't caused by sun spots, but rather what's called "sun allignment". It is when the Sun is directly behind the satellite, causing the satellite's shadow to hit the center of your satellite dish, thus attenuating the satellite signal. Just to be pedantic about it :) , the satellite signa...

Re: Better Signal?

I also noticed a few months ago a tower site that didn't have any registration numbers or anything, but RF warning signs. I went to a couple of boards and was pointed in the direction of a few search sites, but was never able to find any records or anything. Well last week, they started tearing it ...

Re: Better Signal?

Another case, 1230 KWTX-AM, 1,000 Watt station, I live 15 miles away (as the crow flies) from the transmitter, and it has a whine, and static in it, that only gets worse during night-time. Short tower, on the fringe of town. The reception gets a little better in town, but is still horrible. This mi...

Re: Tapeless ENG?

We're P2. It's worked quite well. P2 cards are file-based, I would *think* a standard file-wipe application would adequately wipe out the data - under Linux something like "dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/p2card00". Whether that would be adequate to satisfy the military I've no idea. For archive, we're st...

Re: Digital EPG

Well this was an interesting one. We got a call from a viewer saying their box is seeing "XX-1" but it wasn't actually seeing video/audio. Upon investigating, I opened the Amber software and did a output photo request only to get the error message "PMT is bad", then "PAT is bad". So basically anyon...

Re: Digital EPG

There is a bug in the Pearl software which Bryan Cogswell of Thales shown me, and in the event you have the same issue, this might be related. If you have a reoccuring event , i.e. a weather channel, and it is set to run "infinity" with no termination date, it literally chokes the output of the Pea...

Re: Digital EPG

Where does the EPG info come from? Is it, for instance, read from a text file at the station, or does it come from something liek Gemstar/TV Guide or Tribune? At our station it comes from Tribune Media Services. To address some other points in random order... We've had some trouble with our mux goi...

Re: Digital EPG

Hey TV Engineers... Does the FCC have rules for publishing your DTV EPG like they do for PSIP? There's one station here in town that all they publish is "DTV Program" for their EPG. -A Yes, you're required to publish an EPG with real program titles. Right now it's legal to schedule things in advanc...
