Re: Porcelain Insulators Cracking

Greetings, Thanks to all for your suggestions. The unit with the insulator problem is a Cell Tower detuning network box made by folks who want to make your cell tower... site... safe :D The coil is mounted with the insulators secured to the back wall, I think I'm going to change that and secure the ...

Porcelain Insulators Cracking

Hi All, Anyone who has done AM antenna work knows that porcelain insulators have a propensity to cracking. Typically this is caused by vibrations in the equipment they're used in and lateral shear. That is to say "the coil they're supporting is heavy and wiggles and breaks the insulator". ...

Re: BE AM-6A RF Out Problem

SOLVED !!! Inside the PA Harmonic Filter / Antenna Tuning Unit of the transmitter there was a burned up wire that became disconnected. On Coil L3 there is a 1/4-20 bolt that connects three wires together, the nut wasn't real tight on this bolt and the wire lugs connected with it and the bolt/nut its...

Re: BE AM-6A RF Out Problem

Bob Gorjance.... This issue is a bit weird, because all the PA Modules have Green Lites on them....there are no Red Fault Lites on the PA Modules themselves. The RED "RF Module" Fault lite is showing up on the Exciter and the Red VSWR Lite comes on when I try to turn on the RF. I'm going t...

BE AM-6A RF Out Problem

Greetings... I have an AM-6A that has a RED Power Module warning lite that is ON all the time. 1) All of the PA Modules show good GREEN lites, no issues at all. 2) When I turn on the Power Level 1,2,3,4,or 5 buttons to get some RF output, I get a VSWR RED warning lite and more Reflected Power on the...

Arbitron/Neilsen Encoders

Does anyone know if there is a "Contract" between Neilsen and the radio station to have these units in line ? I had someone tell me that a Contract exists and they cant be removed, ...I've never heard that before. This station that I'm dealing with has never shown up in the ratings... isnt...

Yep... I just thought about that this morning. I'm a creature of habit and go straight to the AM section every time I visit.

Post was moved to the FM page...

Sorry.

Harris Z FM-HD Problem

Hi All, I haven't played with FM HD much so I'm hoping someone here can help guide me thru a problem. I have a high-level combined Harris Z set of FM transmitters that have issues. There is no FM HD being transmitted and I get some Errors on the Flexstar screen. The "Signal Processing Status -E...

Re: GATES ONE IRF-350 REPLACEMENT

Not all IRF350's are created equal. Some are Chinese knockoffs do not hold up under power. If you have IRF350's failing for unknown reasons, better check the manufacturer, could be they're the cheap knockoffs. On the other hand if you're using a 2.5Kw transmitter for 1 Kw output you might not notice...

Re: Dealing with mixing products

The Series-Pass/Trap is a pretty common solution. And... it's used as part of multistation diplexers all the time. Long ago I had to keep a 780Khz station out of a transmitter we had on 820Khz...they were separated by a few miles. Installing this type of trap did the trick quite nicely.

Re: GatesAir suspends AM TX sales (Radio World)

I'm thinking that Gates/Harris is devoting all their resources to the TV Repack. They will be supplying FM transmitters as well as TV transmitters because of the Repack...so AM Rigs take a back seat. My guess is that this is going to be a 3 year long dry spell for AM rigs from them.

Re: TUNING YOUR ANTENNA

There is no magic in the " 50 ohm" point of a Folded Unipole. In fact, as has been pointed out, the 50 ohm point may present quite a bit of reactance along with it. I agree with Deep Thought, find a point that minimizes the reactive part while keeping the resistive part above 20 ohms. Peop...

Folded Unipole Antenna

I'm looking for a copy of John Mullaneys' "UNIPOL" program that he wrote many decades back. It's a program specifically designed for determining various attributes of a folded unipole antenna system. While I can model these antennas in Mini-Nec, the UNIPOL program appears to simplify the d...

Re: To Krone or not to Krone?

If you're doing analog audio I'd stick with the Krone blocks. For all the reasons previously mentioned. If you have a small console, not many channels, no need for connecting to other studios, and unfettered access to the console then direct wiring would be a logical approach. But it sounds like tha...
