Looking for suggestions....

Post by radiowave911 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 7:10 pm

A friend from another forum is working on getting some Ham gear up and running on HF. He is currently looking for an ATU. The less cost to him, the better - he has very little free cash. Any ideas where to suggest he look? The local club chapter is, as he describes it, a bunch of elitist <redacted>. He has tried testing, but they give him wonderful stories such as 'nobody howed up so we canceled' after he spent time - at the designated time and date - waiting where the test was to be held. Fun stuff like that. He is looking at traveling 160 miles one-way now to take the test, instead of the 7 miles since the lcoal club apparently wants nothing to do with him. If he can find something local, that would be great. If not local, then we would have to see how much it would cost to get to him and decide from there. He hasn't found anything local that he can afford, yet. He is in Murphysboro, IL. I suggested he try the local SBE chapter, I know ours has a number of hams in it. Amateur radio operators, too! :D

There has to be something closer than 160 miles...St. Louis is closer than that!

What bands is he contemplating operating on?

As a suggestion, you might want to google "ham radio clubs in Illinois. I found clubs fairly close by in Flora, IL, Belleville, IL and Centralia, IL. I am sure a search will produce quite a few clubs in close proxiMity that would be more that happy to help him out.

By chance, this morning in the dentists office a ham came in - his jacket told the story, It so happens he is in the process of selling of some gear from an estate. One item he mentioned, IN PARICULAR, was an MFJ tuner. You might be able to contact him thru a a search for KA9OIL on QRZ.COM. That will provide a mailing address and possibly an email address as well.
