Head's Up: New movie trailer with EAS in it

Post by rockmanac » Mon Mar 04, 2013 1:27 pm

Just caught the trailer for a new movie called Olympus Has Fallen that has EAS headers and the alert tone in it. The movie is coming out on March 22nd. Not sure if this is airing on local broadcast yet, I saw it during a play of MythBusters on Discovery.

the trailer online doesn't have any EAS headers in it. At least, not that I heard...

Hmm. So it doesn't. They were integrated into the trailer, making me think they cut the one with EAS specifically for broadcast. I'm betting since you'd be used to hearing that on broadcast/cable and therefore it'd get your attention. EAS really doesn't exist on/for the web.

(and it's not like Comcast was doing an EAS test. 1. No crawl. 2. They chopped the duckfarts and tone up to time out with the music / sfx / pace of the trailer.)

Yes, the TV commercial for this movie has the EAS tones on it. We pulled all airings of this spot off of our log today.

I received the following email alert from SBE yesterday (March 7):
This is an advisory that a new movie, Olympus Has Fallen, to be released this month, uses actual EAS tones in the movie trailer. If the trailer is used in radio or TV advertisements, the stations may be subject to FCC fine.

Yup; comments on the YT posting say it parses as a Required Monthly Test, so at least someone was thinking ahead *that* far. And yes, they've cut it to sound like incidental production elements, rather than an actual transmission; whether a real endec would trap on it, following Postel's Law, is unknown.

I also note that people are quoting CFR on the comments, to explain why it violates the rules; I don't know whether those are our people or not. :-)
