ND5 issues

Post by HadYourPhil » Thu Oct 03, 2013 9:09 am

Never had to work on/troubleshoot this particular Nautel beast. I'm pretty sure that it has bad RF modules and I think there's a way to test them through the front vent holes. Anyone able to offer a little ND5 insight?

Thanks.

You have a Nautel ND-5 that's broken??? Wow, I put one in 10 years ago and lost a PA module after first year. Nothing broke since. Can't even recall how we determined which module it was. Suggest you call Jeff at Nautel. He has all the answers at the tip of his tongue.

It's really rough when things never break becuz then you don't know where to start!

What are the symptoms? Which alarm lights are on? What does the multimeter read for PA B- voltage and current?

Is this the one in Madison Heights? I suspect so because I can't hear it on my reference receiver here in Roanoke. Vic and I put that one in - I lost an AF tantalum coupling cap early on in that one but never had any other problems. I'll keep an eye on this thread in case something occurs to me (although none of the three ND-1s that I installed and cared for ever had RF module problems - same module as the ND-5). I concur with Mark - give us more information, especially meter readings as compared with the test sheet. If need be I can get to an ND-1 here in town to compare module readings with yours, and I will be in Lynchburg from mid-morning Monday until late afternoon Tuesday.

That's the one! I won't be in the 'Burg until 10/11. I'll be driving up on 10/10, so I can't provide any readings. I hope the test sheet is still there...

I've worked on older and newer Nautels, but this one has behaved while I've been around it.

Phil -

If the combination lock has not been changed since you started handling the site I should still have the combination. If you would like I can stop by there before power reduction Monday and get a full set of readings and lamp status to post here. All I would really be interested in from the manual would be the test sheet, since I have an electronic copy of the manual and all of the field upgrade documents. I can even bring the flatbed scanner and scan the test sheet in case Mark or anyone else here wants a look at it.

Offhand I don't remember anything about making measurements through the vent holes, but I'll have a look at the prints and the mechanical drawings over the weekend to see if I can figure anything out.

Have you had a look at it since it started acting up, or are you just going by Dorothy's report of no reception and low R/C readings, and waiting until you get to the 'Burg to troubleshoot, maybe hoping to get a long-distance leg up first?

Great! I think the old lock (a Wal-Mart cheapie) is gone, but I'll email you the new combo. I sent a message to your web page.

Apparently there was a vicious lightning strike (to the point of starting a fire) to one of the businesses up the hill. So there could be power supply damage.

Call Nautel. Unlike some other major transmitter manufactures, they have people on staff that can direct you in the proper way to fix it.

True...but first we need to find out what needs to be fixed. My recent experience with Nautel tech support has not been stellar.

I will get a look at it late Monday afternoon and at the very least expect to get a full set of readings and status indicators, as well as a scan of the test data.
