Sage Update 89.34 to Cost $349

Post by radio_guru » Thu Jul 18, 2019 5:25 am

Arrived in the mail this morning. MANDATORY ENDEC 3644 firmware update 89.34 will cost $349.

Argue as we will, it's been a long time coming. Especially if they offer some value added services in this box. Which they appear to be offering dayparting in this version. Which we would likely use.

According to the release, the main purpose of the release will be to accommodate changes in how FEMA will send the alert. No update=no cap messages.

2020 national EAS test: 12% LPFM participation.

To clarify: firmware version 89-34 is a free update that is available now, and addresses issues with how time is handled. Although it is not necessary for the upcoming national test on August 7th, it will be necessary for FCC compliance starting August 12th. Stations really should be installing 89-34 now -- I just installed it on the five units we use at our hub, and it was entirely uneventful.

The $349 upgrade coming in September is a completely different animal, and is the result of FEMA improving security protocols on their servers.

I am going to speculate most of my clients do both updates at the same time... Most of them don't have the ability or desire to do either and a number are going to procrastinate mightily on the paid update.

From the e-mail, the "timing" update seemed to correct a very minor issue on how times of events are logged. I had more problems at times getting the internal time updated because of problems with on-line time servers. Will just do the updates all at once, have enough to do.
