Shure SM-5B windscreen

Post by Frostie »

Moortronix used to sell replacement windscreens for the Shure SM-5B along with other parts. Does anyone know who might have taken over the SM-5B parts inventory from Moortronix? I'm having no luck finding replacement windscreens for this great mic. I'd really like to do a repair that doesn't look like a science project.

Doesn’t Shure still make these?

No, they have been out of production many years. Shure no longer sells parts. Perhaps you are thinking of the SM58, not the SM5B.

Would be nice if someone started making these. Have one SM5b in a control room (classic rock station, appropriately), but have two more working mikes with no foams--ugly looking without them.

I had reached out to this company multiple times: https://www.foampartner.com/en/foam/ind ... ndshields/ to see if they were willing to recreate the 90A2019 & 90B2019 parts, even going to the point of having the plastic attaching rings 3D printed. Not even the courtesy of a reply...

I'm good for 5 pairs if anyone manages to find a vendor to do a group buy

Howdy,

I'm in the same boat with windscreens. A group of us on facebook are getting together to get the exact specs and then see if a foam partner will make them. Otherwise we might try crowdfunding as there are many people who love these mics!

I've been researching the two screens. The front and back windscreens are made out of reticulated foam of different densities. Unfortunately, I don't have a good pair of windscreens to look at/compare. Would you be able to see/compare what ppi or pores per inch the front and rear windscreens are?

Here are two visuals:

https://customfoamtreatments.com/reticulatedfilterfoam/

Would you be willing to also confirm my dimensions:
I have windscreen diameter = 4" and length 4"
The capsule slot is 2-7/8" deep with a diameter of 2-1/2"

If you're able can you measure from the tip of the windscreen to where it goes straight? Basically, the length of just the half sphere.

From what we have gathered, the company Mooretronix used to use got bought out by UFP Technologies.

Wind Tech/Olsen Audio are extremely not interested in making these.

If you want to send me an e-mail address by pm I'll get you a set of photos. Have no idea on how to determine the "porosity," though.

Krush99, wondering if there has been any luck in manufacturing these windscreens. Thanks.

I'm also interested in these. Would love to buy a few pairs just to hang on to.

Sadly Bob Moore passed away last month so it seems Mooretronix will not be back.

I thought I was going to have to go this road alone... good to see others have this same issue. I was so sad to hear about Bob passing. What an absolutely amazing man. A true, true loss not only to the world, but also to those of us who desperately depended on him for SM5B/PR&E items. Hopefully someone steps up and is able to fill the shoes that he leaves.

Please keep me in mind for windscreens as well if anyone moves any further in this.
