4CX20000D

Post by HadYourPhil » Wed Feb 05, 2014 12:23 pm

It seems to me that I've heard less than complimentary things about Econco's rebuilding lately? Is that so? I have one of these tubes that needs a rebuild. Are there any other decent rebuilders out there?

What I've found is I can get a rebuilt Econco 4CX20000C for $2,500 which will last me maybe 2 years if I'm lucky. The option I've chosen with no regrets; go with a new Eimac for $4,200 which lasts me 5-6 years. I'd rather pay just less than 2X and not have to change tubes and with better performance for triple the life. Econco doesn't completely rebuild the tube anyway. Usually they clean them up, replace the filament, grid or whatever is needed, maybe pull a good vacuum, hipot test the tube, and send it out. Eimac used to rebuild tubes too, usually with better results than Econco. I'm not sure if they're still rebuilding.

Well, considering that Econco and Eimac are both owned by the same company now (CPI) there really is no incentive for them to rebuild a tube to last.

I have heard good comments on Zonum Industries. I have not used them but I plan to on my next rebuild. Maybe someone else will have some comments on them.

When I was still down in Texas I would send tubes to Freeland Products with decent results, Only had big problems with one rebuild. But they were also acquired by econco a while back. They essentially own the tube rebuild game.

I had a very reliable source contact me off site to tell me he's had pretty decent performance from Econco-built 4CX20000A and Ds lately. Last one went 4-1/2 years and the new ones also tuned up fine.

Thanks, guys! Good material here. Unfortunately, Zonum doesn't list the 20k as one they do. I emailed them to ask.

We sent Zonum a 20000D a few years ago to see if they could rebuild it. They kept it for awhile, then Manny finally told us he didn't have a jig for rebuilding the filament in that particular tube. So we had him send it down the road to Econco.

That has been a few years ago, maybe they have gotten the capability to rebuild that tube now. I'm not sure which rigs use that tube other than the Harris 35s.

All new tubes are junk... New or rebuilt either. If it was built or rebuilt in the past 15 years, it is junk. I had pretty good luck with Svetlanta tubes but they seem to have disappeared from the US market.

I looked back thru some transmitter logs are regular clients and found that we are getting somewhere between 50-75% life out of current tubes as compared to 15 years ago.

I tried some Zonum rebuilds with less than spectacular results. IIRC, some worked well but others failed prematurely. I also sent Manny a truck load of duds for evaluation and supposedly none of them were rebuildable even though several were virgin tubes in the batch. I never received any of them back...

I also tried Freeland (pre-CPI acquisition) with about the same results as Econco. I don't think that that Freeland exists as a separate company now that CPI bought them.

Interesting about Zonum. I did get an email from Manny saying he could rebuild the D, but maybe I'll stick with the devil I know.
