Sage releases IPAWS firmware update for digital ENDEC

Post by BroadcastDoc »

Painless procedure - it took me about 15 minutes to upgrade my six boxes.

I appreciate the color coding of the sent and received messages in the log that we didn't have before. It's time to move on now to other projects.

Version 89 came out this morning. It fixes a networking issue.

I just updated our units in Syracuse, Binghamton, and Elmira -- and it was relatively painless, as the firmware update pre-configures the connection to the FEMA IPAWS server. What was not so painless is connecting to New York's CAP server; I have yet to get a working configuration for that. Have you gotten them going yet?

I have not had any luck polling the NY server, and actually removed it from our config before updating our unit.

Anyone have any tips for polling NY?

Indeed.

I've been swapping emails with David Donovan (president of the NYSBA), and he says:
The state of New York is in the process of getting an new URL for Cap purposes. Its in the process of getting approved by FEMA. The current URL is

http://rss.nyalert.gov/RSS/CapIndices/_ ... PIndex.xml

However this may change by next week…
I tried using that link in our ENDEC, and it fails: the ENDEC insists on using an "https://" prefix, so it can't see the URL he supplied. I pointed out the problem, and he said:
I have been told that the new link will be a secure https link…and “should” work
It turns out the 'should' is in the future sense: it does not exist now, but should in the (indefinite) future.

Getting closer, maybe.

If you hear any further updates on the NY CAP server, feel free to post them here.

I certainly intend to, and hope it happens this week -- I'm out of town next. Just tried hitting the link with an "https" prefix... no joy.

Maybe try it with neither http:// nor https:// like the FEMA server? Just guessing from out here.

No, according to my contact in Albany, they just haven't finished getting it set up yet. Among other things, FEMA has to approve the states' setups -- to ensure that they're consistent with their protocol, I suppose. The ENDEC automatically tacks on the https:// prefix, which is why you don't enter it in the user interface; if they had let the end user enter the complete properly formed URL, New York's existing server would have worked. Oh, well.

Thanks for the thought, though...

Just an update about New York State's CAP: the NYSBA sent out a link last week to a new secured web site: https://eas.nyalert.gov. The good new is, the Sage ENDEC can see the server and seems to pass whatever authentication tests exist for access; the bad news is, it gets a 404 error, presumably not seeing whatever file it's looking for. According to David Donovan at the NYSBA, other stations are having similar trouble and they're working on it.

I contacted Sage this morning to see if they had anything to suggest, and they say:
The ENDEC does not yet support this newly announced interface to nyalert. It is on our todo list. You can't use it for now.
It's a mystery to me why New York doesn't use a known configuration that other states have already proven; it doesn't exactly inspire confidence for what would happen in an emergency.

More to come when either Albany or Sage gets things straightened out.
