We have a HD-Star. Been pretty happy with it.
For verifying the presence of an analog reference signal, I use...
Earphones.
Seriously, the sound of the sync buzz is distinctive & after listening a few times you'll become familiar with the volume of a proper analog signal. That and, if the sound *changes* you know you're listening to an active analog video signal, not reference. If the buzz is constant it's reference.
If you're having weird problems & suspect the reference might be not quite right, you probably need a scope. If you just want to know whether there's an analog signal present and whether it's active or reference, earphones will do the trick.

I've used this in the field (on sports remotes) and it works great. Generates SDI too..

The HDStar is no longer made. You can only buy it as B Stock or NOS.Archangelos wrote: The options
1. Harris HD Star

It supported only SDI video (both SD, HD), it did not show eye pattern, the battery was Li-ion battery. It's price was the lowest one.
For that money , that Phabrix units would be better suited.
