Convert to LEDs, or leave 110v?
Convert to LEDs, or leave 110v?
I'm thinking of replacing the 110v bulb with some LED's.

Uh, what is it and where is it?

Lighted "Stand By" sign.

Aha. You could stick an LED bulb in it, or cruise Jameco for deals on big LED's. The LED bulb would cost you oh $3 or $4, to get as much light from a couple of LED's--probably more. Plus time.

Why not just use a commonly available 110v. LED bulb screws right into your existing socket.

Exactly. A 20 watt equivalent LED directly replaces this for $5.Jim Sofonia wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2017 7:41 amWhy not just use a commonly available 110v. LED bulb screws right into your existing socket.

Or if you have some other reason for wanting to eliminate the 110VAC component entirely (the noise of the relay, for instance), NAPA sells 12v LED truck marker lights in a variety of sizes and shapes, most of which are around $10-20. They're bright, easily mounted, and you don't need to mess with resistors or current regulators.

Those are the neatest thing since sliced bread for us TV guys trying to provide tally lights one can actually see....
BTW, LED bulbs are available in a number of colors. We replaced the incandescant bulbs in our mike lights with green LEDs; MUCH easier to see.

You're exactly right about the 12V solution
Newbie, first post actually.
So if this device is what I think it is (sorry I work in a specialized TV position) then it only goes off on some predetermined amount of dead air?
If so then surely the simplest most reliable method works best. In the military you'd also have two of everything on top of that, but I digress.

I used strips of 12v LEDs for under console furniture lighting for when you need to work inside a lower cabinet. When I pick up some more I plan on retrofitting an knockoff RCA on the air sign to operate on low voltage.

I did just that with some RCA replica fixtures. I procured 1M long strips of NFLS-R300-X3 series red LEDS from
superbrightleds.com
Super bright emission. Blindly bright
In my fixtures, I went one step farther. I also installed strips of amber and "wig-wag"d the amber and red using a flasher from:
