GatesAir suspends AM TX sales (Radio World)

Post by grich » Thu Mar 15, 2018 2:39 pm

Wow...who's next?

https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-bus ... ansmitters

There's a CapEx request in at one of my clients hoping to replace a very tired SX-1. Guess there's one less quote to gather...

Some of those designs are pretty old, and when you're dealing with solid state power devices you are very much at the mercy of your suppliers. Doesn't surprise me, really.

The irony of that is the SX series still has good parts availability, and Mike Patton has even come up with a nifty retrofit for the failure-plagued diagnostic screen & keypad. Harris just decided they didn't want to mess with them anymore, and that was a decade ago.

Nor I... but the fact that they haven't developed a new design based on semi-current production parts is pretty telling...

Is this the first wobble of an approaching death spiral?

It's not going even be a financial blip on their radar, seeing the influx of cash Gates will be seeing from the upcoming television repack.

See above. With what they are going to be making with the upcoming DTV Repack, they are poised to do very well. I don't forsee the death spiral coming anytime soon.

They've got something in the pipeline which will use parts newer than 20 years old.

Contrary to popular belief (especially online) AM is not dead, especially in the high-dollar, high-profit 100 KW+ international market. Nautel's current designs are building blocks which scale to 2000KW. The same tech is used at 5. Gates Air would be foolish to not be in there with some competitive offerings.

Well, when our DAX3 dies and repair parts are no longer available, this seems to be where we are ultimately headed, then what? This is going to put a lot of smaller struggling broadcasters in a bind. We are merely engineers. We don't walk on water, nor resurrect the dead.

But did I not see an article or announcement (maybe a couple of years ago) that the manufacturers had severely over estimated the need for new transmitter and antenna equipment in the repack? Maybe I just dreamed it...

I don't do TV (other than with a remote and recliner) so haven't followed the HD conversion circus with anything more than casual disinterest.

I think I heard some ground rumbling in Quincy---Parker Gates must be rolling over in his grave! :(

My. how times have changed. Good thing there are still two decent am xmttr brands out there------Nautel and BE. And thanks to Mike Patton for his contributions on updates for the SX series, not to mention repairing MW-1 modules. Good thing transistors are still readily available for those rigs.

Which reminds me...need to order some IRF-350s.

If the capex request gets pushed back, I'm gonna ask for the retrofit keypad. I have just enough bottom display left to get by.

I just had a pair of BW Broadcast FM's on the workbench with failed power supplies. BW no longer had any stock, nor could they get them, nor could they offer a redesign or retrofit...and these are three year old transmitters. Three years. T-h-r-e-e- years and no parts.
But hey, they offered 25% off on trade-in.
I had to find an equivalent Meanwell and do a minor bit of drilling. It would be an easy factory retrofit, but they can't be bothered.

Now Harris and Nautel both use GE switchers. Which one day will be discontinued, out of stock and not repairable. And it will happen in far less time than one normally expects a transmitter to run. Nautel will keep stock on hand, but that is not infinite. Harris for a few years, maybe. What then, when they are gone?

That is exactly where we are headed. Hell, we're already there.

Come on over. Foster's is imported here, and the AFL Grand Final is usually on one of the Fox Sports channels.

Not to mention how you can probably get some free meals by having folks treat you to Outback Steakhouse so you can explain how much is and is not authentically Australian about that chain (I'm betting that little if any is authentic).
