Silent spot

Post by w9wi » Mon Jan 08, 2018 11:37 pm

Yep, they're at it again... Someone has produced a spot with ~20sec. of silence at the head.

I see why they did it -- it makes artistic sense in context -- but I'm tired of these emails from the silence sensor.....

Can you dub 20Hz over the silent part? Might make the silent sensor happy, and not bother the client.
Trim to fit, paint to match, tune for minimum smoke.

The worst ones were those with black in the first few seconds of the spot....but that's back in the day when I actually did the switching & everything was either video tape or film chain.

Several times a year, one of our beloved car dealers runs a 30-second silent spot, with white text on a black background.

Our traffic folks are nice enough to give us a heads-up when that flight is about to start. Helps lessen, but not completely relieves cardiac stress. :)

Glad I"m in Radio.......

Though I suppose if a client wanted to buy 30-60 seconds of silence, we'd probably sell it to them.....

I have a client who bought 60 minutes of "silence" in the middle of the night on a distant high-power co-channel station so we could take some field measurements at night.

Or the Hollywood Exchange spot, that aired on NBC Network. Started out with bars and tone.

That was a fun one when it aired, and because it was on network, we got no local indication it was going to air.

I missed out on that one. If I had been on duty, I can imagine the swearing under my breath as I trotted back to master control...

I seem to remember that a radio station in Tulsa had either the sign-off sponsored by Cain's Coffee, or maybe the silence afterwards. Always got a chuckle out of it. This was in the dark ages of the 50's.

I worked for an AM station awhile back that had a sponsor for pattern change.

I had heard a story, not sure if it was just internet fodder or true, of an oil company that sponsored a pattern change. Would list towns they serve in the day pattern, then it would switch, and continue to list towns served in the night pattern.
