Software to control Broadcast Tools 8x2 Audio Switcher

Post by Fran3 » Thu Jan 11, 2018 2:44 pm

With some other equipment we just acquired a used Broadcast tools 8 x 2 audio switcher that was being used with a very old automation system.

I was wondering if you guys could suggest some free (or otherwise) software that we could use to control that via a PC.

We would like to be able to schedule it to switch to different sound sources at different times of the day... like satellite feeds... or local pre-recorded content... or whatever.

I was considering writing it from scratch in Python but I'm up to ears in another software development project for an online database system and therefore wanted to evaluate other possible solutions.

Thanks for any help.

Is this a serial switcher? Some of the old, old switchers used a closure to activate/deactivate channels to output.

Are you using automation?

I don't know of anything specifically written for the BT 8.2 but any app what will send text to a com port will do it. I have done something similar using a terminal program that does scripting. We used to do scheduled serial commands all the time with ProcommPlus scripting but I assume that it is long, long in the past.

If there is a stand alone app aimed at the 8.2 I would be interested in it myself.

I assume that you can still send text to a com port via the command line but haven't done it since early winders versions.

If you use a USB to serial port adapter, be aware that sometimes your port # will change for absolutely no reason.

Good luck.

It has both contact closure and serial port control and communicates via ASCII commands. Pretty basic stuff...you could probably write something to send command strings on a clock fairly easily, even in BASIC. I've got one of their SS 8.2 units in the basement that came with a bunch of other stuff from a decommissioned site, and if it works I'll see if I can conjure something up.

What exact model do you have?

As Kevin noted above, you're best bet is to control this from a computer with an actual serial port since the USB dongles can "move".

BT used to have software on their website. Something called NetSwitch, IIRC.

Well ain't that something. I had saw that before but thought that it was something to do with satellite switching. It doesn't appear to do scheduled stuff but very cool.

Late response but here is the info on the unit...

Front panel says: 8 x 2 Dual Stereo Switcher
Rear Panel says: 40568

I can find no other info on the device.

Does it look like this?

If so the manual is on the BT site. I always automated control of them from automation systems.

I've used a few of these with good results. Never had a failure.

I didn't know about the software (thanks for the info) , but the RS232 interface is easy to program.

They had a model 44.22 version that was discontinued recently. This version has four AES digital inputs and four analog inputs that you can send to either of two AES or analog outputs. This really consolidates everything into one box for me. I recently bought another 44.22 used for backup. I was told it was a parts obsolescence issue building the 44.22. I've found the folks at Broadcast Tools are good to deal with and have been told that the owner does a personal QA before anything leaves the factory.
