Commscope Connectors and Andrew 7/8" Line

Post by Dale H. Cook » Wed Jul 11, 2018 9:00 am

Does anyone know if the current Commscope connectors for 7/8" foam line will fit older (say, 20-30 years) Andrew line?

Probably not. The new line has a paper-thin outer conductor and a foam-filled inner conductor that requires a coring tool to prep it. The inside diameter of the center conductor is a little larger which makes for a loose fit on the old connector center pins. Also, it takes special care to install a grounding kit, you can easily cut right through the outer conductor when removing the jacket.

Ooops, I misread your post and reversed the situation. It may be a struggle to force new connectors onto old line.

In that case does anyone have a pair of Andrew L5PNF-RC or -RPC connectors they can sell? I would not mind refitting used connectors if they are in good shape and if I can get a copy of the installation instructions. Only one will be outdoors.

The current/new connectors definitely will not work on the older LDF5 series cable. The current series of connectors barley work with the new AVA5 cable. I really don't understand why building connectors for the new cable has been so difficult. The LDF series connectors were a snap to install. There was one series of connectors that worked 100% of the time and were easily installed without any special tools or jigs. A hacksaw with a fine tooth blade and an old tooth brush were all that was necessary.

The series of one piece connectors they went through with the ball bearings were nearly useless. I am very loyal to Andrew/Commscope, but have seriously considered looking at Celwave again due to the connector issues.

As with all things, YMMV.
