WKRP

Post by Jim Sofonia » Wed Jul 25, 2018 11:12 am

Kinda trivia question I don't know the answer. Does anyone know whose antenna shows up briefly in the opening credits of WKRP? We have been getting MeTv on our cable lineup earlier this year. I never saw this show in it's original run, so I'm loving it as a new series for me.

It's the channel 5 TV tower (WLWT, Cincinnati).

Was there ever a real WKRP? A callsign search only pulls up WKRP-LP in Raleigh, North Carolina, wich is a low power fm.

I have my doubts about whether that station was ever built. My office is close by the alleged location, and I can't even hear a whisper of a carrier on their frequency.

No it is not. It was demolished after the new DTV tower was constructed.

It's gone, replaced by a taller one (ASRN 1038226) in 2004.

There IS a WKRC in Cincinnati which was owned by Taft back then (iHeart now). The GM in the show, Arthur Carlson, was reportedly named after the then-President (or CEO or one of those) of Susquehanna Broadcasting, who was (reportedly) not amused.

The beauty of it is that it is so typical of how radio was in the 70’s. Not real far from the truth.

I note that all the WKRPs in Dave’s database were named after the show first came on. Reckon nobody thought having ‘KR(a)P in your call letters was a good idea before that. :?

70's? I worked at a station in the mid-late 1980's where they could have scripts for the next 10 seasons!

Well, we have a station whose on-air moniker is Radio Cumbre, and I was surprised the commission gave them the calls they have!

Then of course, there is the fun in having to setup a repaired RDS generator after it's reinstalled in the air-chain.

We were only on the air like this for about 30 minutes before I set it to the correct call sign. I really didn't like the "KRDS" call sign it came with back from the factory.

What is that under the INO? Looks like a McMartin item with the wood grain.

Harking back a post: the former WNAB! Given the English meaning of cumbre, if they had had to, they could have settled for WSUM. But they didn’t have to.
