IPAWS Server bouncing?

Post by PID_Stop » Fri Sep 28, 2018 2:23 pm

For the last half hour or so, all five Sage ENDECs in our regional group have been showing the IPAWS server going up and down -- and they're all in different locations, so it isn't just the internet feed to our building. We're running the most recent firmware with the new certificate. Is anyone else seeing this?

They are updating DOS 6.22 on their IBM PC-AT server...

I have a box full of Down/Up messages from 8 or 9 units that I monitor.

.
Updating it to what? DOS 7? :wink:

A fellow I used to work for would, when sufficiently lubricated, insist vehemently that Windows 95 was mounted on DOS 7. Maybe he was right. :mrgreen:

I received this from Al Kenyon last night via the SBE-EAS reflector.

=============================Begin Forwarded Message =====================================================

This afternoon FEMA experienced a recurring intermittent connectivity issue at one of our data centers. Effective 6 PM EDT 100% of the EAS Atom Feed traffic has been directed to the other data center. We anticipate running this way until Monday when we hope to be able to get core connectivity issue resolved.

He might not have been far off... I recall that earlier versions of winders were merely a GUI for DOS and then Win95 used DOS to start and at some point in the boot process started win.com which took over almost everything from there.

Actually...he was entirely correct. WIn 95 is just a pretty front end for DOS 7 (and 7.1 for '98).
The DOS OS can be extracted from underneath Win 9X with a simple edit to MSDOS. SYS and run as a stand alone OS. WIndows just adds a GUI on top.

Guess I’ll have to fire up the 95 machine sitting out in the garage and investigate. I had a suspicion he was right but it was too much fun to argue with him!

Open up MSDOS.SYS in a text editor. It's just a text file in 95/98.
Change: BootGUI=1 to BootGUI=0
Add a line: LOGO=0
Reboot and presto, DOS 7
