Horizontal or vertical

Post by oldradioguy » Tue Dec 04, 2018 2:19 pm

Thinking of moving a translator to a highly directional situation... Like literally nothing on the backside. Should be doable with LP or yagis.... But if only one possible, vertical or horizontal. It's a car radio world, but not all car radio antennas are vertical any more. Plus a hilly area, so there will be reflections.

Look at the Scala HDCA-5CP/RM, which is a 5 element circularly-polarized yagi. There are two smaller models as well, all rated for 250 watts.

Those Yagis have a lot off the backside.

You can combine a V and H pol log periodic using a power divider. Scala routinely does these. It'll take up twice the tower space but if you've got it, it's a good solution.

I've seen several translators that use a linear pol Yagi oriented for slant 45 deg pol.
You don't get the fading benefits of a CP antenna, but I suppose you can double your power if you are licensed for both vertical and horizontal pols (1/2 vertical and 1/2 horizontal).

I do not know if Aldena have an agent in the USA, but they have a good crossed LP antenna for this:
