Looking for a Sage ENDEC 3644

Post by renewradio » Mon Jun 03, 2019 7:32 am

Our DASDEC II has had some issues and we need to send it back to Monroe. After they change the drive out and we upgrade the firmware we'll be dropping somewhere around $850 on it. If there was a used Sage unit out there, I'd prefer to put that money towards it. Does anyone know of a used unit? And I welcome your feedback.

Here's an Ebay listing for a barely-used one for a pretty good price compared to a new one. Might message the seller about it.

Already sold.

I may one coming available at the end of the month after a station sale. Would be in the same price range.

We snagged one for our LPFM from Bay Country when it showed up. Got tired of those thieves at Monroe and kicked them to the curb. In our case it was $250 for a SSD replacement (for a drive I could have bought anywhere else for < $100) and oh, $500 more if we wanted a version upgrade. We had them replace the SSD at the time and then I took a CloneZilla image of it in case it went belly up again.

I just had an SSD replaced and the unit checked and I thought the total was very reasonable... I still despise the hodgepodge that is the programming pages in the DasDec units. This particular unit apparently had a preliminary or unreleased firmware that refused to update using the normal methods. The Monroe tech didn't recognize the original very, very early version number as anything that was supposed to have been in the wild. They ended up changing the drive to make it update normally.

I have another Dasdec that will soon be replaced with an MSRP on a related Sage if anybody is looking for a Dasdec

And yes, $500 for a firmware upgrade is ridiculous. Especially if the update is mandated by another FEMA or FCC change. I have several Dasdec's that clients bought at the last second when Sages were backordered.

Admittedly, they are a very powerful platform but are much too complicated for simple radio use.

The matter of charged firmware updates was specifically brought up in various NPRM's over the years as an undue burden foisted upon licensees.

The FCC simply sniffed the matter and said it was a cost of doing business. Well....so is the fact most stations have thumbed their collective noses at the FCC's list of event codes, as repeatedly modified, and have hamstrung the nation's EM message relay effort.

For the FCC a cost of doing business but for the little mom & pop station, well serving their market, a months electric bill.
