KOLN-TV 1500 foot tower down

Post by Shane »

The KOLN-TV tower at Beaver Crossing, Nebraska, collapsed due to an ice storm during the early morning hours of January 18, 2020.

BEAVER CROSSING, Neb. (KOLN) - Service has been restored to the majority of 10/11 viewers who lost signal when a KOLN tower collapsed overnight, but some over-the-air viewers may still be unable to receive our signal.

The main KOLN tower in rural Beaver Crossing, Nebraska collapsed during the ice storm. There were no injuries when the 1,500 foot tower fell to the ground.

“First and foremost, no one was at the tower site, so there were no injuries. We are so thankful for that,” said Vice President & General Manager Shannon Booth.

Most of 10/11’s carriage partners including Spectrum have reestablished connection. And Lincoln area over-the-air viewers just need to re-scan to restore the KOLN channel 10 lineup.

Our carriage partners worked quickly Saturday to get our streams back up.

Viewers outside the Lincoln metro area in the eastern part of the 10/11 viewing area, who previously relied on the Beaver Crossing tower, may continue to be unable to receive the signal.

Booth added, “Fortunately we have multiple streams, additional towers and alternative delivery methods. We thank our 10/11 viewers – the best around – for hanging in there with us.”

They have a low power channel 18 in the city which was pressed into service to carry channel 10’s 5 streams and is what people get if they rescan. Many close-in viewers who are not close enough to pick up 18 and who don’t have cable or other alternatives to over-the-air are still out of luck.

The storm that came through didn’t have all that much ice but it included some powerful wind bursts along the front and one of these could have been a factor. The one that blew through my Omaha neighborhood seemed like it should have easily taken some trees with it.

On the FB group “I take pictures of transmitter sites” an observation was made that the tower in its collapsed state looked like it had a lot of rust inside the legs.

KOLN-TV's tower was constructed in 1984, according to FCC records. KOLN did not repack.
