New Antenna and Tower for WPSD

Antenna, transmitter switch temporarily disrupting signal
BY ERIC WALKER E*****@****.COM May 27, 2020

PADUCAH - The installation of a new antenna tower and transmitter for Paducah-based television station WPSD’s required frequency change has resulted in temporarily-disrupted service for Local 6 and NBC viewers in Mayfield, Graves County and the station’s broadcast area.

While the switchover is underway, it has meant that the station is currently broadcasting from a transmission tower that is approximately 800 feet tall, which is half of its normal height, according to WPSD chief engineer Dan Wilson.

Also, the Federal Communications Commission allows peak power during this time at 150 kilowatts of ERP (Efficient Radiated Power), Wilson said. When the tower is completed, full ERP power would be 679 kilowatts.

“Because of the lower (signal) strength, we can’t penetrate buildings,” he said, noting it has caused problems for viewers who have internal TV antennas in their homes receiving the station’s signal.

“If a person took that inside antenna and took it outside and toward our (Paducah’s) direction, they’d probably pick it up,” Wilson said.

Even living in a low area or farther away from the transmission tower would result in disruption.

Completion of the tower and transmitter installation process is expected by the end of June.
